The motley crew of pirates and adventurers that defended the few remaining members of the Thieves Guild of WaterDeep during the Scarlet Festival and single handedly defeated the fearsome Red Wizard, Seilon the Harlot, traveled Northward, hoping to find those responsible for the mass murder and assassinations that took place in Water Deep and seek the help of former adventurers from the Sundering at the behest of Armond Celesti for the war he and Captain Valerion see on the horizon.
Far to the North, deep within the Sword Coast, vast numbers of soldiers, mercenary bands, and bounty hunters converged upon a port city, chasing fortune and glory. However many that come to the city and march off into the wilderness to the North-west, none return. Every day, more bands of soldiers of fortune and adventurers march down the old, cracked highway, into the dark of the ancient trees and swirling fog.
The party steers the warship deep in land, braving the treacherous waters of the Sword Coast, storms, undead, and the horrors of the Black Lake to make landfall in the oddly thriving, overcast and fog covered city of Rotenheim. Supposedly a once thriving hub of trade and fishing prior to the Sundering and a key stop along the Highway to a now disappeared kingdom, lost to the fog and the Sea of Trees.
Once in Rotenheim, the party discovers that a vast and non-human intolerant rogue Guild of mercenaries have laid anchor therein. Popular for their size and brutality to non-humans as much as their leadership––the Seven Blades.
As usual, the Strange Minstrel, I’iloki, made a magnificent entrance as he introduced himself to an opinionated mercenary that took umbrage with Drah and focused his rage upon the half human, half elf musician. In grand fashion, I’iloki covered the scene with blood via use of High Abyssal. The mercenary officer attempted to start a fight and bring down the wrath of his mercs upon the privateers just as an arrow pierced his eye and dropped him dead. The crowd dispersed with the party uncertain of whom they had to thank for warding off the crowd of violent mercs.
Drah goes to meet with Vistani caravaners prior to heading off to the Sea of Trees. I’iloki, always seeking to build his forces, heard that a large group of orcs had taken refuge in the forest after a long journey and appear to be in need of aid. With the aid of Grym, they make it to the orc encampment, largely avoiding confrontation, save for a battle with fearsome wolves. I’iloki and Grym defeat the forest creatures, I’iloki takes the head of the massive creature as a trophy to present to the orcs. Little to his knowledge, he was being tailed by Orc rangers and was escorted into the encampment, handily handling diplomacy with his force of personality, candor and use of Orcish.
Drah, Drago and the Vistani follow I’iloki into the Sea of Trees after a Vistani Wise Woman informs Drah of the danger that I’iloki is in, not from the orcs, but the Sea of Trees, itself. Dargo marches after I’iloki into the Sea of Trees and loses him, becoming lost and then apprehended by mysterious figures and taken away.
Meanwhile, the guardian angel of the privateers within Rotenheim, meets with her contacts and informs them of the party’s decision to rush into the forest. Mialee meets with Saeryne the Violet, a human wizard, and D’argrym the dwarf Paladin. Saeryne informs Mialee of the movement of the ‘Others’, what the locals call the roaming hordes of undead and those lost to the Sea of Trees.
The privateers, unbeknownst to themselves, are walking into a trap amidst the Sea of Trees as undead hordes approach from all sides. Saeryne shares his knowledge of an ancient ‘shortcut’ that could get them to the party and deliver reinforcements against the massing hordes. The ‘shortcut’ will take them through an ancient subterranean structure known as the Black Sepulchre. But before they make the journey through the underground, Saeryne says that he must go find one more soul willing to brave the dangers of the forgotten, colossal, fortress and whatever may lie in wait for them.
